The Annual Show

The highlight of our gardening calendar, the Annual Show is a fun and friendly competition where members can showcase their best flowers, vegetables, fruit and homemade produce. Whether you're entering the competition or just coming to admire, it's a wonderful way to celebrate our members' hard work and creativity!

Homegrown fruit and vegetables (including the longest runner bean!)

Trophy History

Faulkener Cup to the society.

In 1901, the Hanstead Estate in Bricket Wood went up for sale and was sold in two lots. Sir Holland Hibbert, owner of the Munden Estate, purchased part of the estate, built a large country house and gave it to his daughter, the Hon Mrs Elsie Faulconer, as a wedding present. In 1928, Captain R C Faulkener, the president of the SSHS, donated and presented the 


family tradition and made a fortune breeding and racing horses. She was also a keen horticulturist, with a particular interest in agricultural research, trying out unconventional methods of cultivation on her farmland. Five years before her death in 1957, she donated the Gladys Yule Cup to the SSHS.


The remainder of the Hanstead Estate was purchased by David Yule, a very rich and successful businessman. After his death in 1928, his wife Lady Yule and daughter Gladys remained at Hansteads. Gladys kept up the 

In 1931, Mr J P Hall, the club president, donated the J P Hall trophy, which up to 1967 was presented to the lady obtaining the most points in the annual show.


In 1934, Mr Rideout donated and won the Rideout Cup.


During the 1970’s and 80’s, a number of local residents active in the society donated trophies for the show. These included Mrs Clarke from Lye House, Mr Godden, Mr James (Greensleeves Trophy, named after his house in 

School Lane), Mrs McMillan, Mrs Barker (named after her Green Man Cottage), Gwen Stephens and Ron Forward. Ron was well known for selling dahlias and sweet peas on the roadside outside his house in Park Street Lane. He had an allotment alongside the railway and was rumoured to have shown sweet peas at the Chelsea Flower Show.
